Challenger.
TheCouncilofChiefStateSchoolOfficers(CCSSO),aneducationorganizationrepresentingthechiefeducationofficialsof
the
nation,wasaskedbyNASAtoassistin
the
developnlentandadministrationof
this
excitingandimportanteducationalactivity.ThestatecommissionersandsuperintendentsofeducationwerepleasedtojoinseveralothereducatorsandourcolleaguesatNASAinplanninganeducationalprogramthatwouldresultinselectingthemostsuitablenamefortheneworbiter.TheNASAOrbiter-NamingProgramwasachallenge
to
Americanstudentsthatstimulatedstudyandresearch.Studentswererequiredtoworkinteamsandtointegrateknowledgebyconnectinghistorical,scientific,technical,andartisticinformationinapersuasivecasesupportingtheirrecommendation.Itwasaprogramthatwouldleavealegacyofinquiryinournatit)n'sclassrooms.TheNASAOrbiter-NamingProgramwaslaunchedinMarch1988,anditssuccessisevidencedbytheenormousinterestgeneratedbothnationallyandinternationally.TheCCSSOdistributedmorethan490,000Announce-menlsofOpportunitytoparticipateintheprogram.StudentsenrolledinUnitedStatespublicandprivateschools,elementarythroughsecondary(kindergarten-grade12),wereeligibletoparticipate.Qualifyingschoolsincludedschoolsinthe50states,theDistrictofColumbia,thefiveU.S.jurisdictions(AmericanSamoa,Guam,PuertoRico,theNorthernMarianaIslands,andtheVirginIslands),BureauofIndianAffairsschools,DepartmentofDefenseDependentSchools,andDepartmento[Stateoverseasschools.Inresponsetorequestsfromteachers,68,690ProgramEntryPacketsweredistributed.Teamsinvolvingatotalof71,652studentsreturncd6,154entrypacketstothecouncilforprocessing.ThetotalnumberofDivision1entries(kindergarten-grade6)was4,059andforDivision2(grades7-12),therewere2,095entries.Ofthetotalentries,3,834werefromelementaryschools,1,109frommiddleschools,673fromjuniorhighschools,and538fromseniorhighschools.Theteams,whichnumberedfrom4to888memberseach,submitted422differentnames.ThecouncilisdelightedthatAmericanstudentsmet
