While you look at this, I am probably ferverishly

writing code, rigging a model in 3dsmax, or tuning the

phototransistor circuit for the mixed reality game I am
developing for the capstone project for my Master’s
Degree in Game Programming from DePaul University
what is it you ask?

it plays something like this...
there is an urban scale physical game revolving
around the alignment of laser cannons

and a digital game within a procedurally

expanding obstacle course

functionality of the mesh network

prototyped and the housings designed.

before DePaul, my work investigated interactivity,
play and games in projects completed with my
partners in a design collaborative known as sand_box
a precursor, cross reality game, was conceived between a race to contain swarms
of “intelligent” balloons inside an operable house and a climbing video game set
inside an hour glass filled with household objects
sand_box coalesced
around an early
installation project at
an abandonded home in
rural New Hampshire

To put the tired building

back into play, we
performed a series of
cutting, hinging and
restructuring operations
to allow its walls to
pivot, turning it
inside-out
we then coated the existing painted
surfaces with phosphorescent paint
to charge outside-in the sun, for
nightime illumination indoors
years later,
the salvaged
walls became
input devices
in a gallery
installation in
Brooklyn
one wall
controlled
a custom
lighting
system

the other
controlled
the playback
of video
projection
if the walls aligned, effectively cutting the space in half, the system “flatlined” and
minutes later automatically “defibrillated”, surging to life after swapping functionality
while in limbo; this kept the space and it’s occupants in a constant state of play
for a collection of video based oral
histories, sand_box designed and built
an interactive environment intended to
express the stratifcation of time and history.
100 sheets of cnc milled plywood, custom
electronics + software, provide museum
goers access to the curated media
viewers explore a
topography of sliding
picture frames,
selecting the histories
they are interested in
viewing, much like a
collective juke box
on each end, a navigable display panel
provides access to the collective queue
in a collaboration with filmakers in Denmark, we
explored the metaphor of infinite space in the
design of an airport for purgatory via green screen

it kept going, and going
and to keep the lights on, we practiced more conventional architecture
for residential and commercial clients across the country

prior to forming sand_box, I was an
associate at MESH architectures in New York
at MESH, I managed high-end residential...
+ up-scale commercial architecture projects, and ...
built signficant data driven web sites and new media
this professional work enabled and supported the
past 8 years of teaching design and digital media

Illinois Institute of Technology
