Poetry 11: Satirical Poetry
St. George
Nancy Senior
My dragon always loved walksHe used to go to the wallwhere the golden chain hungand take it in his mouthlaying his head on my lapsideways, so the fire wouldn’t burn my skirtHe looked so funny that waywith his wings dragging the floor and his rear end high up because he couldn’t bend his hind legsWith him on the leash, I could go anywhere No band of robbers dared attack This morning in the woodswe had stopped for a drink where a spring gushes out of a cavewhen suddenly, a man in amour riding a white horseleapt out of the bushescrying “Have no fear I will save you”And before I could say a wordhe had stabbed my dragon in the throatand leaping down from the horsecut off his headand held it up for me to seethe poor eyes still surprisedand mine filling with tearsHe hadn’t even had time to put out his clawsAnd the man said“Don’t cry, MaidenYou are safe nowBut let me give some good advice Don’t ever walk alone in the woodsfor the next time you meet a dragonthere might not be a knight around to save you”
