BP, the operator of Olympic Pipe Line Company waspleased to have attended an Alabama Hill Associationmeeting to have a conversation with members of theneighborhood about the pipeline and the role pipelineneighbors have in keeping pipelines safe in theircommunity.
What is Olympic Pipe Line?
The Olympic Pipe Line is a vital link in the North-west’s energy transportation system, supplyingtransportation of gasoline, diesel and jet fuel from fourrefineries located in Whatcom and Skagit Counties. The pipeline system consists of a 400-mile networkrunning in a 299-mile corridor the entire length ofWestern Washington. The pipe-line system shipsapproximately 300,000 barrels of fuel each day,Seattle, Sea-Tac Airport, Tacoma, Vancouver,Washington and Portland, Oregon. The OlympicPipe Line is the sole supplier of jet fuel to SeaTacAirport. Most Alabama Hill neighbors are well awareof the pipeline and know where it is located, but many

One of our long time neighbors in the Alabama Hill neighborhood is the Olympic Pipeline.

We thought it would be a good time to get to know them a little better. They were helpful in providing this info from their presentation at our last neighborhood meeting in November. For all our safety become aware of this important information.AHA Ed.

dial 811. One easy phone call to 811 starts the process to getunderground pipelines and utility lines marked for free.
so that we may be on-site during your excavation to monitorthe excavation and ensure the integrity of the pipeline ismaintained.
You may have noticed Olympic Pipe Line’s aerial patrol planeof one of its weekly surveillance flights. The plane flies low fora visual inspection of the right of way, looking for any potentialdangers to the pipeline such as excavation activities, orpossible leaks. If you cause or witness even minor damage to a pipeline or it’sprotective coating, please notify the company immediately.Even a small scrape, gouge or dent requires repair as it couldsubsequently lead to corrosion.
Safe pipelines in your community.
Fortunately for pipeline operators and the public, WhatcomCounty is home to some of our nations leading pipeline safetyadvocates. The Whatcom County Council recently passed anordinance creating a new “consultation zone” requiring thatpipeline are to be notified when someone someone seeks apermit within 500 feet of an underground transmissionpipeline. The law will help pipeline operators become aware ofprojects well in advance of construction and will further assistto prevent third party damage to pipelines by requiring proofthat a one-call was placed.
How you can help.
If you suspect a leak, here’s what you can do:
Become familiar with the Olympic Pipe Line right of way inyour neighborhood.
Call 911, and/or Olympic at (888) 271-8880 depending onthe situation.
Be aware of unusual or suspicious activity or unauthorizedexcavations near the right of way, and please report anysuch activities immediately to Olympic.
Working together, we can continue to improve safety on theOlympic Pipe Line system to the benefit of the Alabama Hillneighborhood, as well as the entire Pacific Northwest.Olympic thanks the Alabama Hill Association for theopportunity to meet with residents and share this importantsafety information

people learned for the first time Olympic’s damageprevention efforts, and that residents also have a rolein ensuring pipeline safety.
How to recognize a pipeline.
Pipeline markers are important for the safety of thegeneral public and provide emergency responderswith critical information identifying the company, theproduct transported, and a phone number to use inthe event of an emergency. Pipeline markers areplaced along pipeline rights-of-way identifying theapproximate (not exact) route of the pipeline.Olympic’s pipeline is in use 24/7 and the
CURBSIDE MARKER
phone number on our signs is direct to our controlcenter in Renton. In the event of an emergency, operators will immediately dispatch trained personnelto assist public safety officials in their response to theemergency. Pipeline operators will take immediatesteps to isolate the emergency by closing valves tominimize the amount of product released.
Preventing damage to pipelines.
Alabama Hill residents should know even minorexcavation activities like landscaping and fencing cancause damage to a pipeline and its protective casing. In fact, most serious pipeline accidents are causedwhen a third party inadvertently digs into the pipeline. If you see excavation equipment in yourneighborhood, it is wise to inquire if a one-call hasbeen placed. If you are planning a project and needto dig deeper than one foot, it’s the law to contact theState One-Call Center – ust ick u the hone andOnce your under-groundlines have been markedfor your project, you willknow the approximateloca-tion of pipelinesand utility lines on yourproperty, and you candig safely. If you aredigging within 10 feetof the pipeline. Olympicwill coordinate with you
