The Center or International Media Assistance (CIMA)
, a project o theNational Endowment or Democracy, aims to strengthen the support, raisethe visibility, and improve the eectiveness o media assistance programsby providing inormation, building networks, conducting research, andhighlighting the indispensable role independent media play in the creationand development o sustainable democracies around the world. An im-portant aspect o CIMA’s work is to research ways to attract additional U.S.private sector interest in and support or international media development.CIMA convenes working groups, discussions, and panels on a variety o topics in the feld o media development and assistance. The center alsoissues reports and recommendations based on working group discussionsand other investigations. These reports aim to provide policymakers, aswell as donors and practitioners, with ideas or bolstering the eectivenesso media assistance.

 Jerey Ghannam 
Jeffrey Ghannam is an independent media consultant, attorney, and veteran journalist. Since2001, he has served in numerous media development efforts and was awarded a John S. andJames L. Knight International Journalism Fellowship in Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt, Jordan, andLebanon. He has trained journalists in Morocco, Lebanon, and Jordan, and conducted mediaevaluations in Qatar and Egypt in U.S. media development initiatives. Before going into mediadevelopment, Ghannam spent a decade at the

, where he covered the lawand worked as an editor on the national, foreign, and metro desks. He has also reported asa legal affairs writer for the American Bar Association Journal and contributed to The NewYork Times from Washington, D.C., The Boston Globe from Detroit, and Time Magazine fromCairo. He served as the Marsh Visiting Professor of Journalism in 2001-2002 at the Universityof Michigan, where he taught on the intersection of law and journalism and reporting on war.He is a graduate of Michigan State University’s School of Journalism, Georgetown University’sSchool of Foreign Service, and the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law.
