 About the author 
 John Twigg is an Honorary Research Fellow at the Benfield Hazard Research Centre, University of London,researching and writing on social and institutional aspects of risk reduction. His recent projects includeresearch on NGO activities in disaster mitigation and preparedness, vulnerability analysis and sustainablelivelihoods approaches, and corporate social responsibility and disaster reduction. He worked previouslyin the development NGO sector, in government and in a university. He co-ordinates the natural-hazards-disasters email discussion list and was a member of the UK National Coordination Committee for the UNInternational Decade for Natural Disaster Reduction.
