Hurricane Hits England
Grace Nichols

I
ntroduction
I
n 1987 hurricane-force winds hit thesouthern coast of England and caused agreat deal of damage to the landscape.Large numbers of trees were uprooted, forinstance. Hurricanes are rare in Englandbut common in the Caribbean where GraceNichols grew up. This poem explores thearrival in England of an
aspect
of theauthor's past.

The Speaker
The poem is mainly written in thefirst person narrative, from the pointof view of a woman lying awakelistening to the wind. There is a shortintroductory
stanza
written in thethird person but most of the poem isan address to the winds, or the godscontrolling them.
