n short, Building Professionals should ensurethat products used in the construction of abuilding conform to our national standardsand are certified as such.In turn, industry players supplying products forthe construction of a building must ensure thatsuch products meet our national standards andare certified as such. The crux of the matter is that the Building Profes-sional enforces the compliances with our nationalstandards in respect of products used on thebuilding site and is not tempted by more cheaplypriced products which are not performing accord-ing national standards. A plethora of anecdoticalevidence exists citing examples of product failureas a result of not enforcing compliance with ournational standards. Not least is the story regard-ing a Building Professional saving some moneyfor his client but allegedly causing the death ofthirteen occupants of a building by substitutingthe specified product which was certified to besuitable for the application. There are some other points which the BuildingProfessional and other industry players must takeinto consideration.
Foreign versus local
Imported materials/products may well have beencertified to meet foreign national standards. Thatthese standards meet therefore South AfricanNational Standards must never be assumed.Always and without fail insist that the importedmaterials/products are successfully tested to meetSouth African National Standards.Guard against conventional wisdom! Many wellestablished computer simulation programs cur-rently used by Building Professionals use materialproperties well established in the internationalarena. Guess what!!! Somebody forgot to tellthe South African material suppliers that theywere supposed to meet the foreign materialproperties. Then there are the Certificates confirming mate-rial properties and/product performance. Someare created in-house by the supplier; others areissued by reputable and less reputable testingfacilities.
Quis custodiet ipso custode?
So “who guards the guards” and protects the BuildingProfessional against possible fishy certification. In South Africa it is SANAS, the South African Na-tional Accreditation System, which certifies testinglaboratories in respect of equipment calibration, operator proficiency and method of reporting, among other. Building Professionals are urged toview Certification issued by companies not having aSANAS accreditation with great circumspection. Our Association has established a testing labora-tory for the testing of building envelope systemswhich is independently operated by the ThermalTest Laboratory which is SANAS accredited. The TTL can test fenestration, insulation materi-als and building envelope systems. AAAMSA cantherefore provide the Building Professional withthe appropriate Certification!!
Kind regards Hans A Schefferlie Executive Director

The Consumer Protection Act will shortly come into effect. Our Association has on many occasions advised industryplayers and Building Professionals alike to ensure due dili-gence in complying with the provisions of this act.
So “who guards the guards” and protects the BuildingProfessional against possible fishy certification
