With a young and often seasonal workforce, the BirminghamYMCA was challenged to provide consistent and meaningfulinformation during the onboarding process without taking awayfrom the important work that needed to be done by these newemployees. Similarly, the Y’s management did not feel that everyexisting employee had been given a proper introduction to workingat the YMCA. The goals for this new process included elevatingthe Birmingham YMCA’s employer brand in order to recruit thebest employees in the area.

Establishing A Reputation as an Employer of Choice
With accelerated growth brought on by the purchase of fourbranches of SportsFirst from the Baptist Health Systems in theprevious year, the Birmingham YMCA accepted the challengeof assimilating two corporate cultures. With this forward-thinkinggrowth strategy, it became clear that the employee orientationprocess had to change. With so many employees located ina geographically diverse area in need of a comprehensiveonboarding process, the YMCA needed to approach orientation ina new way.In order to develop their new onboarding process, one thatworked for both management and for new employees, the YMCAhad to examine both the process and the information that wasbeing delivered.
