Measures of dispersion

Dispersion actually indicates the spread of the values. It actually measures the distance of all the values from the original values. The smaller thedistance or spread, the better is the distribution. If the distance is wider, it is no more a gooddistribution.
Basic objectives of measuring dispersion:
1)

To examine the representativeness of the average value.2)

To decide about the acceptability of the average value. If we combine central tendency and dispersion, then our decision will be sound & correct.

 Uses of Standard deviation:1.

Standers Deviation is most commonly used form of measuring dispersion.2.

Standers Deviation is highly useful in case of statistical quality control of a product.

3.

Standers Deviation is used in different statistical distributions like ± NormalDistribution, Binomial distribution, uniform distribution and Poisson distribution.4.

Standers Deviation is also used in sampling theories to find out sampling errors of thedistribution.5.

Standers Deviation is also useful in test of hypothesis.Example in quality control:
X+3   .73%X+   5.45%X+   . 7%

Quartile Distribution:It divides any distribution in four parts, when we sort them in ascending or descending order.Quartile deviation is the average variation of the values, between the first quarter and thirdquarter, arranging them in ascending or descending order.
