Findings and Challenges for Educators and Researchersfrom the 2009 Johns Hopkins University Summit
 
The Dana Foundation is a private philanthropicorganization with particular interests in brainscience, immunology, and education.
In 2004, Dana funded the Dana Arts and CognitionConsortium bringing together scientists from sevenresearch institutions to study how arts training in chil-dren might affect other learning domains. The resultsof the study were published in 2008 and became thefocus for an all-day summit focused on neuroeduca-tion, hosted by the Johns Hopkins Neuro-EducationInitiative, in cooperation with Dana. This publicationis an outcome of that summit meeting.
In the science and health felds, Dana grantssupport research in neuroscience and immunology. As part o its outreach to the public, Dana producesbooks and periodicals rom the Dana Press, coor-dinates the international Brain Awareness week campaign; and supports the Dana Alliance or BrainInitiatives, a nonproft organization o more than250 neuroscientists, including ten Nobel laureates,committed to advancing public awareness o theprogress o brain research. .Located at The Johns Hopkins University School o Education, the Neuro-Education Initiative (NEI)bridges the gap between the brain sciences andeducation by bringing together an interdisciplinary group o researchers, educators, and stakeholdersto explore the intersection and application o brainresearch in education and to support potential areaso translational research.Supported by the Johns Hopkins University’sBrain Science Institute, the Neuro-EducationInitiative spearheads collaborative projects amongresearch and educational aculty rom across theUniversity and beyond to advance the science o learning. Such projects include national summitsand conerences on topics relevant to education,graduate programs, and research initiatives to bringnew knowledge to inorm educational practicesand policies.In partnership with The Dana Foundation andas a ollow-up to the Dana Arts and CognitionConsortium, NEI hosted its inaugural nationalsummit in May 2009 on the topic o Learning, Arts,and the Brain. This publication captures the spirit o collaboration among summit participants who repre-sented a wide array o disciplines among the research,academic, arts and educational practitioner commu-nities. Future summits will build on this spirit o discovery and communication to bring the practicalneeds o educators and stakeholders to the researchcommunity and the exciting discoveries o the brainsciences to those who teach and nurture children.For more inormation and uture events visit
