The Mariner
beaplaceforpeopletosharetheirexperienceswiththecommunityandillustratewhataspecialplacethisisandwhatdaringandadventurouscharacterscallMDRhome.Thismonththemagazineisfullwiththatsentiment.Itmakesmeproudthatthepagescontainstoriesofpeoplewhotookongreatriskandcrossedoceans.Andthey’renotjustpeople–they’reus.AfewmonthsagoitwasteenagerZacSunderlandwholeftourdockstocircletheglobeandthismonthweheardfromNaomiShirleywho,withhardlyanyexperience,isinthemidstofdoingthesamethingwithherhusband.JimCashsharedaslicefromhiscatamaranjourneyfromSouthAfricatoMDRandthreeyoungkidsfromLifesailwillchallengethemselvesmakingtheirownoceancrossingtoCatalinasailing8-footSabots.Intheracingsectionthere’sareportfromCalYachtClubwhohostedtheJ-80NorthAmericansandataleofaAntrim27thatsufferedanintenseroundupintheSantaBarbaratoKingHarborracewheretwowomenwerethrownoverboard.Asthestoriescamein,itmademerealize(again)thatthisplacereallyhasgotalotofamazingstuffgoingon.Iwon’tlie-IgetdownonL.A.sometimes,butwhenI’minthewaterphotographingoneoftheseeventsandseeitallputtogetherattheendofamonthinanissue,it’sprettyinspiring–especiallythisone.
