TO:DistributionFROM:S/Associate Administrator for Space Science andApplicationsSUBJECT:Gamma Ray Observatory (GRO) Prelaunch MissionOperations Report (MOR)Enclosed for your information is the GRO Prelaunch MOR whichcovers the GRO deployment mission. This Observatory will belaunched on the STS-37 mission in April. The GRO is the second of four Great Observatories to be launched(the first was the Hubble Space Telescope in April 1990).Eachof these complementary Observatories will view the universe in adifferent region of the electromagnetic spectrum.Together, theGreat Observatories will enable the international sciencecommunity to study astronomical objects in ways never beforepossible. This Observatory is the first spacecraft with a complement oflarge sophisticated instruments designed to study a broad rangeof gamma ray energies. It will be placed in a 450 km circularorbit by the Space Shuttle Atlantis. After about 5 weeks ofactivation, checkout, and calibration, the spacecraft wili begin
a
year-long all sky survey of the gamma ray universe. In lateryears it will view in greater
detail
intriguing objectsidentified by the survey. This MOR (a) describes the objectives of the GRO mission; (b)provides a discussion of the mission deployment; (c) provides abrief description of the Observatory and its scientificinstruments; and (d) outlines the ground operations elementsrequired to support its launch, deployment, activation, andscience operations.L.
