In 1889 the gunsmiths in Belgium’s Liege Regionormed an association to fll an order rom theBelgian military or 150,000 Mauser ries builtunder license. Thus Fabrique Nationale ormedand is the origin o today’s FN, a designation that isstill a worldwide hallmark o quality.In 1897, the FN tradition expanded with thepartnership o John Moses Browning, one o themost innovative frearms designers in history.Together, FN and Browning produced several othe most prestigious frearms in the world,including the 9mm Hi Power pistol, numerousBrowning machine guns, the Auto-5 autoloadingshotgun, the .22 semi-automatic rie and theB25 Superposed shotgun – arms that were Madein Belgium and are still legendary.FN products received the ultimateacknowledgement in 1957 and 1982, respectively,when NATO adopted our 7.62mm and 5.56mmcaliber ammunition designs as their militarystandard. The success o the M249, M240, .50caliber machine guns, and the felding o the FAL(Light Assault Rie) by more than 90 countries alldemonstrate FN’s commitment to excellence.FN’s ull name is Fabrique Nationale Herstal(FNH). Herstal was added to FN when it becamea subsidiary o the Belgian-based company, theHerstal Group. FNH and the Herstal Group arebased out o Liege, Belgium, just an hour driverom the NATO Headquarters in Brussels. TheHerstal Group is known around the globe or thequality and perormance o its products. Underthe brand names FN Herstal, Browning andWinchester, the Herstal Group designs,manuactures and distributes a ull range oirearms and accessories or deense, lawenorcement, hunting and competition.
LEADER IN SMALL ARMS
In the United States FN is represented by twoentities; FNH USA, which is responsible or sales,marketing and business development, and FNM,which handles manuacturing. Together they havea workorce o approximately 700 employees.FNH USA was started in 1998 in McLean, Virginia.FNH USA is split into two separate divisions:military operations and law enorcement/ commercial operations. The role o FNH USA is tocoordinate business development with allgovernment agencies and to grow FN market sharein the law enorcement and commercial sector.FN Manuacturing, located in Columbia, SouthCarolina, is the U.S. manuacturing arm o FN.Design, research and development, andmanuacturing activities are conducted underthe authority o the mother company, FN HerstalSA. Some o the frearms that FNM produces or theU.S. Government are M16 ries, M249 LightMachine Guns and M240 Medium MachineGuns. FNM also produces the FNP and FNX lineo handguns, as well as the SPR and TSR XPbolt-action rie line or FNH USA.FNM is one o only three small arms manuacturersdesignated by the U.S. Government as theindustry base or small arms production. Ourreputation or quality and reliability hasbeen clearly demonstrated by the adoption onumerous FN weapon systems by the U.S.military and law enorcement organizations.
Among FN’s latest designs, and potentially one oits most inuential amily o frearms, arerepresented by the 5.56 mm MK 16 carbine,7.62 mm MK 17 assault rie and 40 mm MK 13Grenade Launcher, all developed under theSpecial Operations Forces Combat Assault Rie(SCAR) program. In January 2004 the U.S. SpecialOperations Command (USSOCOM) begansoliciting or a new assault rie, the SCAR.In November o the same year, the FN model othe SCAR
was chosen over 11 other bids.The enhanced capability o the FN SCAR
isdirectly related to its modularity (capableo 9 dierent conigurations) and itsdevelopment process. The FN SCAR
will replaceseven frearms now in the USSOCOMinventory. These frearms were developedhand-in-hand with SOF operators and FNengineers. The MK 16, MK 17 and MK 13are truly an operator envisioned, testedand chosen frearm system. They are nowbeing operationally felded in overseasdeployment by units o the U.S. Military.The FN SCAR
16S and 17S are also availableas semi-auto, civilian-legal versions, and areideal or 3-gun practical competition.
