BACKGROUND
In 1889 the gunsmiths in Belgium’s Liege Regionormed an association to fll an order rom theBelgian military or 150,000 Mauser ries builtunder license. Thus Fabrique Nationale ormedand is the origin o today’s FN, a designation that isstill a worldwide hallmark o quality. In 1897, the FN tradition expanded with thepartnership o John Moses Browning, one o themost innovative frearms designers in history.Together, FN and Browning produced several othe most prestigious frearms in the world, including the 9mm Hi Power pistol, numerousBrowning machine guns, the Auto-5 autoloadingshotgun, the .22 semi-automatic rie and theB25 Superposed shotgun – arms that were Madein Belgium and are still legendary.FN products received the ultimateacknowledgement in 1957 and 1982, respectively, when NATO adopted our 7.62mm and 5.56mmcaliber ammunition designs as their militarystandard. The success o the M249, M240, .50caliber machine guns, and the felding o the FAL(Light Assault Rie) by more than 90 countries alldemonstrate FN’s commitment to excellence.FN’s ull name is Fabrique Nationale Herstal(FNH). Herstal was added to FN when it becamea subsidiary o the Belgian-based company, theHerstal Group. FNH and the Herstal Group arebased out o Liege, Belgium, just an hour driverom the NATO Headquarters in Brussels. TheHerstal Group is known around the globe or thequality and perormance o its products. Underthe brand names FN Herstal, Browning andWinchester, the Herstal Group designs, manuactures and distributes a ull range oirearms and accessories or deense, lawenorcement, hunting and competition.
LEADER IN SMALL ARMS
In the United States FN is represented by twoentities; FNH USA, which is responsible or sales, marketing and business development, and FNM,which handles manuacturing. Together they havea workorce o approximately 700 employees.FNH USA was started in 1998 in McLean, Virginia.FNH USA is split into two separate divisions:military operations and law enorcement/ commercial operations. The role o FNH USA is tocoordinate business development with allgovernment agencies and to grow FN market sharein the law enorcement and commercial sector.FN Manuacturing, located in Columbia, SouthCarolina, is the U.S. manuacturing arm o FN.Design, research and development, andmanuacturing activities are conducted underthe authority o the mother company, FN HerstalSA. Some o the frearms that FNM produces or theU.S. Government are M16 ries, M249 LightMachine Guns and M240 Medium MachineGuns. FNM also produces the FNP and FNX lineo handguns, as well as the SPR and TSR XPbolt-action rie line or FNH USA.FNM is one o only three small arms manuacturersdesignated by the U.S. Government as theindustry base or small arms production. Ourreputation or quality and reliability hasbeen clearly demonstrated by the adoption onumerous FN weapon systems by the U.S.military and law enorcement organizations.
FUTURE FIREARMS
Among FN’s latest designs, and potentially one oits most inuential amily o frearms, arerepresented by the 5.56 mm MK 16 carbine,7.62 mm MK 17 assault rie and 40 mm MK 13Grenade Launcher, all developed under theSpecial Operations Forces Combat Assault Rie(SCAR) program. In January 2004 the U.S. SpecialOperations Command (USSOCOM) begansoliciting or a new assault rie, the SCAR.In November o the same year, the FN model othe SCAR
was chosen over 11 other bids. The enhanced capability o the FN SCAR
isdirectly related to its modularity (capableo 9 dierent conigurations) and itsdevelopment process. The FN SCAR
will replaceseven frearms now in the USSOCOMinventory. These frearms were developedhand-in-hand with SOF operators and FNengineers. The MK 16, MK 17 and MK 13are truly an operator envisioned, testedand chosen frearm system. They are nowbeing operationally felded in overseasdeployment by units o the U.S. Military. The FN SCAR
16S and 17S are also availableas semi-auto, civilian-legal versions, and areideal or 3-gun practical competition.
