The Ideal Place to Study Biology

Hawai‘i
Highest Extinction Rate in
United States, Hawaii has…
< 1% of landmass of United States!
>30% of rare and endangered
species in the United States.
lost over 1000 species to
extinction since arrival of humans.
~300 endangered plant species.
About 1/3 have <20 individual
plants.
~50% of all native plants
endangered.

Fundamental processes
variable among diversity
of living organisms.
Evolution.
Key Themes of Course
How science has developed
historically.
Relationship between
science and society.
Key processes are the same
for all organisms.
Significance of biological
variation and adaptability.
Review: Important Part of
Learning
Recommendations:
Download and read outline
before class.
Take notes in class!
Review lecture notes and
outlines after class (doing so in
a group would be better).
Answer question immediately
after lecture (again, doing it in a
group would be better).
Why Biology 101?
We are in the most unique
place in the world.
There are global problems
that affect us all.
Knowing basics of biology
will help your overall
