Soluons Overview
Challenge
Following the deployment of a new soware distribuonplaorm, Microso System Center Conguraon Manager(SCCM), the NHS Trust decided to amplify the potenalfor further savings by deploying a power and patchmanagement soluon.
Soluon
Power & Patch Management from 1E was chosen as it wasconsidered the most t-for-purpose soluon.
Benet
Projected savings of over £18,500 per year, year on year.“One month in and we were already saving approximately
£1,250 per month across just the PCs which had had the
agreed power policy applied. In just one year, we stand tosave over £18,500 but also reduce our carbon emissionsby approximately 143 metric tonnes a year. These savings, coupled with a shi in awareness and behaviour amongstour sta to turn o lights and equipment when not inuse, were some of the keystone reasons behind our beingawarded the Greenest Hospital 2010 award.”
Shaun Jefery, ICT Operaons Managerat Newham University Hospital NHS Trust
Newham University Hospital NHS Trust (NUHT), is a 379 bed Acute
Trust, which serves one of Britain’s most diverse, fastest growing and
youngest populaons. As an organisaon, the Trust is rmly focused onmeeng the needs and priories of the local populaon.The winning London 2012 Olympic Games bid was founded on thesustainable principles of the local community in Newham. NewhamUniversity Hospital NHS Trust is ground-breaking amongst NHSorganisaons for its approach to embracing the sustainability andcarbon reducon agenda. It has won naonal recognion for its work inthis area, including being named ‘Greenest Hospital’ at the Healthcare,Excellence and Leadership (HEAL) 2010 awards.
Harnessing savings from Power & Patch
Management
The combined power and patch management soluon of NightWatchman version 6.0 and WakeUp from 1E was deployed inJune 2010. The 1E soluon was considered the most robust andcongurable soluon for a 24/7/365 paent care environment. Itsght integraon with Newham University Hospital’s new sowaredistribuon plaorm, Microso System Center Conguraon Manager(SCCM) added further management benets and increased the overalleciency of IT.Power state informaon from all PCs on which the NightWatchmanand WakeUp soware was deployed was gathered for a fortnightfollowing the implementaon. Collecng power state informaoninvolves tracking and recording computer acvity as well as the energyusage of each individual PC. NightWatchman uses built-in intelligenceto understand the power usage of a single PC based on its specicmake and model number - in Newham’s case, a combinaon of FujitsuEsprimo E5720 and E5730 and Dell GX620 machines. The soware alsoulises informaon specic to energy taris charged by EDF Energy, the Trust’s energy provider, (in this case £0.07 per kWh of electricity),for the most accurate and comprehensive view of power use availableon the market today. The informaon collated was then made visibleto the NHS Trust in the form of at-a-glance esmated power and costsavings reports within the NightWatchman console.
