Land’s Sake Essay and Poster Contest AnnouncedOn April 16, you might say some Floyd residents will be looking long and hard atthe ground beneath our feet. During the presentation, “Land’s Sake: Floyd’sJourney Ahead,” speakers will direct the audience’s attention to the natural beautyand abundant natural resources of Floyd County. They’ll also lift up the challengesand opportunities for gaining from and giving back to the land.The future of Floyd belongs to our youth. The event’s Essay and Poster Contestinvites all school-aged students to create either an essay or a poster that explores orcelebrates our relationship to the places we love—particularly the outdoor placesand our natural surroundings. This creative effort can result in both a deeperunderstanding of the “wheres” of our lives, and an increased commitment for andrenewed effort towards protecting our local streams, forests, soils, farms and openspaces for the future.Each contestant can submit a single poster or essay. In each category, the judgingwill be divided into 4-7 and 8-12 grade levels. In each category and grade range,there will be prizes of $50, $25, $15 and $10. All entrants will receive recognitionwith their name in the program for the day, and a small gift.Essays and posters will respond to one of three designated topics given brieflyhere: 1. What did the oldest people in your family or community eat before therewere supermarkets?; 2. Where I’m From: Complete the story-poem template withdetails from your land and home, life and memories; and 3. Why should we careabout and protect our air, water, soil, wildlife or forests of Floyd County?The four essay prize winners in each age group will be notified by April 13 andread their work during the lunch hour on April 16. Both essay and poster winnerswill be presented with their prizes at this time.
