Peer Out to See
he air inside the Crystal Palace
isheld stiller and quieter than the air outside, though it does remain fluid with air outsideand with air and birds moving through thechinks between the panes of glass.Looking back at that work from this rattled world, I can see thosecracks in my imagination, cracks of inquietude, becoming real chasmsin the world that I know. (Cracks might result from rattling air.)Frightening chasms. But the rattling of thin air also offers the possibil-ity of holes opening up to allow full rich air to rush in, or for explosionsof extraordinary happiness.Tis slowed down body of air filled with changing light as the earthrotates is at the center of the work
Peer Out to See
. Te slowed downpace of event inside provokes notice of the body’s eventfulness, andquestions about time hover.Te Pier built into the Crystal Palace mirrors the structure thatmight be built out into the lake facing the Palace. Tis slippage intime/fantasy lodges itself in-between the particles of pigment, coloredash, light, and molecules of air and plastic. Te resulting vibration sur-rounds the viewer on the pier held, together with the air, by the planesof glass in time slowed down. Te star pond growing duckweed slowlyunfolds in still communion with the other planes of color, all seenagainst the gray expanse of the floor — flat and facing the heavens.
