Introduction
• Plant layout refers to the arrangement of machinery,
equipment and other industrial facilities such as
receiving and shipping departments, tool rooms,
maintenance rooms and employee amenities- for
achieving quickest and smooth production at least cost.
• By ‘Knowles and Thomson’ plant layout involves:-
i. Planning and arranging manufacturing machinery,
equipment, and services for the first time in completely
new plants.
ii. The improvements in layouts already in use in order to
introduce new methods and improvements in
manufacturing procedures

The volume of production and provision for expansion.
Making or buying a particular component.
Purchasing policy
Personnel policies
• Principle of sequence
• Principle of Usage
• Principle of compactness
• Combination layout
Advantages:-
• Work In Process almost eliminated.
• Minimum manufacturing time.
• Reduced material handling activities.
Disadvantages:-
• No flexibility in the production process.
• High capital investment.
• There is difficulty of supervision
• Any breakdown of equipment along a production line can
disrupt the whole system

Fixed Position Layout
• It involves the movement of men and machines to the
product which remains stationary
• This type is followed in the manufacture of bulky and heavy
products, such as locomotives, ships, boilers, air craft and
generators.
