astronauts

1959,

were
on
flightstatus
in
June
1982.
Thirty-
six
of the
78
were
pilot
astronauts
and
42
were
mission
special-
ist
or
scientistastronauts.
Nine
groups
of
astronauts
have
been selected.
In
Group
1
were
the
seven
Mercuryastronautsselected
in
April
1959.
Nine
test
pilots,
Group
2,
were
selected
in
September
1962.
In
Group
3
were
14
pilotastronautsselected
in
October
1963.
Group
4,
the
first
six
scientistastronauts,was
selected
in
June
1965.
In
April
1966,
19
pilot
astronauts
were
selected
in
Group
5.
Group
6,
11
scientist-astronauts,
was
selected
in
August
1967.
Seven
AirForce
MannedOrbital Laboratory
pilotsjoined
the
NASA
pilotastronaut
program
in
August
1969,
as
Group
7.
Group
8, 35
men
and
women,
the
first
groupselected
specifically
for
the
Space
Shuttle
in
January
1978,
completed
training
in
August
1979.
Group
9,
19
men
and
women,
selected
forthe
SpaceShuttle
in
July
1980,
completedtraining
in
August
1981.
NASA
will
recruit
new
astronautcandidate
groups
as
needed.
Theseastronautcandidateswillbecome
SpaceShuttle
pilots
and
mission
specialistsupon
completion
of
training.

will
be
issued well
in
advance
of
the
dates
when
applicationswill
be
