MAJOR Characteristics of a (violent) Revolution

(1) Must attack old order

(2) Replace old order with new state structure
(3) often the new structure is more representative
(4) Restores liberty (more rights)
(5) Happens in steps (phases)
(6) Preceded by a strong belief in an “ism”
an ism is a belief, you have to have the idea before you have the
revolution
if those first two don’t happen, a revolution won’t happen

COMMON Characteristics of a Revolution

(1) Starts with tax increase
(2) Ruler refuses to compromise
(3) Rebellion of an army
(4) Division of revolutionary movement
(5) Starts with economic hardship
(6) Threat of outside forces
(often happens in the latter phases of a revolution)
