Haddy, Philip J Friday, January 28, 2011 4:29 PM Ferentz Statement January 28, 2011 KIRK FERENTZ STATEMENT IOWA CITY, IA ~ The following is statement issued today by University of Iowa Head Football Coach Kirk Ferentz. “Lam pleased to learn that five of the 13 members of the UI football team are being discharged from UI Hospitals and Clinics throughout this afternoon and evening. Iam very happy for these student-athletes and their families, and look forward to the release of the remaining student-athletes in the days ahead. “Our entire staff shares the concern expressed by University of lowa President Sally Mason and President David Miles of the Iowa Board of Regents and the State of Iowa, for the well-being and continued recovery of every student-athlete treated at University of lowa Hospitals and Clinics. “Thave been communicating with each student-athlete and their parents, or guardians, since learning they were admitted into the hospital. Members of the football staff have also been communicating daily with this group. Thanks Joe joe.sched@eson.com cell 860 839 0510 Schad Tests for illagal drugs administered to the 13 lowa football players hospitalized with a kidney ailment came back negative, according to a parent briefed on the results. ‘According to a source, parents agreed to the testing which was recornmendled by a physician on Tuesday, tests were conducted on Tuesday and Wednesday and results were made known on Thursday. ‘The players were hospitalized on Monday and lowa coach Kirk Ferentz came off the road recruiting to visit with the players and their parents on Wednesday. ‘According to one parent, Ferentz was "blistered” for not returning to lowa sooner. "Where were you?" one parent said he asked. "How can you be out recuiting other kids? You sat In our living room and told us you'd take care of them. The parent said Ferentz, who has not yet commented publioly on the intense workouts that likely contributed to the ilinesses, “was quiet. | believe he is devastated by all this. He has been wonderful, But his mistake was not coming off the road right away." Ferentz and school athletic director Gary Barta have not yet commented an the situation, Barta did not immediately return a message Friday and a spokesperson sald Ferentz may issue a statement on the matter before Wednesday's national signing day. ‘Some parents are blaming the intensity of a workout conducted last Thursday in which a trainer had players do 100 ‘squats at haif their maximum ablities before pushing sleds. ‘According to a parent, after a three-week layoff following the Insight Bows, this was the first workout the players were asked to do. ‘According to a parent, a strength coach said in a meeting before the sessions that the Hawkeyes had failed to finish ‘games too often last season and that, "Weill find out who wants to be here.’ “There were workouts on Thursday and Friday followed by two days off ard then a request this Monday for more squats, Wich resulted in such sorenoss and cramping that it led to the hospitalizations, One parent said some played had gained 30 to 50 pounds since entering the hospital because of the amount of fluids that has been forced into their bodies. The parent said that one player was told he had sustained *20 to 30 percent loss of kicney function and that the damage may or may not be repaired." ‘An lowa spokesperson said some players may be released today.
