When it comes to boating around these parts, I thinkthe main thing to keep in mind is to not forget the“worst case scenario”. Some places it’s hard to getinto trouble, but here, things can get a little hairy if you don’t have it halfway together.I was moored up at Catalina not too long ago andwas reminded of how quickly things can potentiallygo south. At around 11 a.m. on a sunny morning, three of us decided to take the 10-ft in
atable witha 5 HP engine for a trip down the scenic Catalinacoastline. As we headed east, all was well - thewind and currents were at our backs and we hada blast checking out the clear water, caves andwildlife that are so abundant.A few hours later we turned for home and afterabout 10 minutes, the wind and waves picked upconsiderably - in the upwind climb the dinghyfelt smaller and weaker. Catalina’s cold water wassplashing over the bow as we headed west withthe motor working for every inch. Listening to thepersistent whine of the 2-stroke I began to think,“damn I bet this thing is drinking some gas rightnow.”I was smiling and yucking with the folks, but inmy mind I was thinking, “hmmm, if I run out of gas, this wind and current will not be pushing meanywhere I want to be.”The wind force strengthened and my little motorstayed with the
ght, but I knew I miscalculated. The tank was full when we left but why didn’t Ibring an extra can of gas?I ended up pulling into the USC Science Center, ahalf mile from where my boat was moored, thentook a very long hot uncomfortable walk to the gasdock and back.It sucked, but risking it would have been realsketchy. I was reminded that, I wasn’t a smilingover-tanned, pot-bellied, middle-aged white-manin a Jimmy Buffet song, but a real person in a smallboat running low on fuel in a strong out-goingcurrent with two people who were counting on menot to risk their lives. Next time I’ll think ahead...
