night vision device
(NVD) is anoptical instrumentthat allowsimages to be produced in levels of light approaching totaldarkness. They are most often used by themilitaryandlaw enforcementagencies, but are available tocivilianusers. The term usually refers to a complete unit, including an imageintensifier tube, a protective and generally water-resistanthousing, and some type of mounting system. Many NVDs alsoinclude sacrificial lenses, IR illuminators, andtelescopic lenses.Night vision devices were first used inWorld War II, and cameinto wide use during theVietnam War .

The technology hasevolved greatly since their introduction, leading to several"generations" of night vision equipment with performanceincreasing and price decreasing.
 
NVDs have been around for more than 40 years. They are categorizedby
generation
. Each substantial change in NVD technology establishes a newgeneration.
