 Widely distributedreports have noted inJanuary 1968, Obama was registered as aMuslim at Jakarta's Roman Catholic FranciscusAssisi Primary School under the name BarrySoetoro. He was listed as an Indonesian citizenwhosestepfather,listed on school documents as "L Soetoro Ma," worked for the topographydepartment of the Indonesian Army.Catholic schoolsin Indonesiaroutinely acceptnon-Catholic students, butexempt them fromstudying religion.Obama's school documents,though, wrongly list him asbeingIndonesian.  After attending the Assisi Primary School,Obama was enrolled – also as a Muslim,according to documents – in the BesukiPrimary School, a public school in Jakarta.The Loatze blog run by an Americanexpatriate in Southeast Asia who visited theBesuki school, noted, "All Indonesian studentsare required to study religion at school and ayoung 'Barry Soetoro' being a Muslim wouldhave been required to study Islam daily inschool.
