Attack
Pick a card and “attack” the word. If you
read it correctly you can move forward a
space. Some challenge words are worth 2
spaces. First player to reach “finish” wins
the game.

I created this game so it could easily be modified to
fit the needs of your class. You can print as many
word cards as you would like. Some I will mark with
a “2” to indicate it is worth 2 spaces. I plan to type
and print my words on labels and attach to the front
of the cards. You could also just write them in with
a marker if you choose.

The inspiration for this game came during a guided

reading lesson with some of my struggling readers.
Many of them are in the habit of just guessing at
the word without really looking at it and breaking it
into phonemes that they know. When I told them
they had to “attack” the word and break it apart,
something “clicked” and they started decoding, not
just guessing. I thought this game would be a fun
way for them to practice their “attack” skills.

Enjoy!
