The Avondale Business Association very kindly storedthe set of display boards donated to us by BlockhouseBay Historical Society, along with remaining boxes of the Avondale heritage walks brochures. Unfortunately, their storage area was broken into around 6-7February, their set of Christmas lights stolen, and thenthe miscreants (yes, I could use a stronger term, butlet’s keep things clean) set fire to the place. On the good news side, the ABA were able to salvagefive boxes (1500 copies) of the brochures, five of theboards, and eight stands (the latter items the ABAcleaned and repainted. They are now in AWHSstorage.
St NiniansLoss of some AWHS display boards andheritage brochures through arson
AWHS were the first communitygroup to utilise St Ninians since2007, when we had our first meetingfor 2011 there on Saturday 5 Febru-ary. It was a stinking hot day, wereally could have done with a fan ortwo but, clustered at the far end nearan open doorway, we had a success-ful meeting, followed by refresh-ments, during which time manywandered out and had a good look atthe adjoining cemetery. Our thanks to Auckland Council(and the previous City Council) forall the hard work taken in restoring the church buildingfor community use, and to the Avondale CommunitySociety who have spearheaded the applications toCouncil for a lease so that St Ninians will be availablefor community groups to hire. There are still some de-lays regarding the lease and formal legal permissions, but hopefully these will be a formality only.To be held 11-12 November 2011.
