Indeed, territorial disputesarethe most commoncauseof wars, andinfact, it hasbeenestablished that territorial disputesusually lead tomilitary conflict. Whenterritorial disputesescalatetovery highlevels, thereisa likelihood that thecountriesinvolved inthedisputewill experiencerecurringconflicts.Therearemany examplesthroughout history that provethispoint.
Apart from territorial disputes,otherdisputesmayarisewhenone nation's activities threatento destabilize its adversaries. Forinstance, when one country isinvolvedintheproductionandtesting of nuclear weaponry, thiscan cause conflict if its adversariesfeelthreatenedbytheventure.Otheractions,suchassatellite espionage, forming a military alliance with a nation'sadversaries,andthelike,canalsoleadtowarsbetweencountries.Prisonersofwarareoftentreateddifferentlythanotherprisoners. For example, in the US's "War on Terror," themajorityofenemycombatantshavebeenheldinsolitaryconfinement in the US military prison at Guantanamo Bay.Lawyersrepresentingtheseprisonersthereforehaveadauntingtaskindefendingtheirclients,astheyhavenotbeentreatedlikeotherprisonersintheUSpenalsystem.Generallyspeaking,itisveryuncommonforlawyerstowincasesforprisoners of war.To prosecute prisoners of war, meanwhile,lawyersmayhavetotraveltothecountrieswheretheallegedcrimeswere committed in order to gather evidence to implicate theaccused. War crimes usually occur over a long period of time,andthismaynecessitatethatthepeopleinlegaljobsgatherevidenceoveranumberofmonthsorevenyears.Also,somewitnessestotheallegedcrimesmayhavedied,andsomesurvivorsmaynotbewillingtovolunteerinformation.Thismayprolongthetimetakentogettheevidence.Outside the arena of literal war, firms or individuals may findthemselves"atwar"withotherpartiesduetomanyactionssuchasbreachesofcontract,fraud,divorce,andsoon.Someofthedisputesthatcompaniesareinvolvedinincludeemploymentdisputes,medicalandlegalmalpracticecases,business and commercial disputes, and personal injury cases,among others.Employmentdisputesmayinvolvediscriminationbasedonreligion, race, age, gender, and origin. Medical and legalmalpracticecasesinvolvemedicalandlegalworkthatwasnot carried out according to the given profession's requiredstandards.Businessandcommercialdisputesmayinvolvepartnershipagreements,corporatedisputes,contractualdisputes,insurancedisputes,realestatedisputes,andsoon.Litigationrelatingtopersonalinjuriesmayincludeslippingandfalling, assault and battery, wrongful death, and motor vehicleinjuries among others.There are many options that are available to a party that hasbeen injured, whether physically or financially. One can decide toseek legal redress by going to the courts, or the matter canbe settled by agreement outside of the courts of law.Inordertoqualifyforattorneyjobs,oneisrequiredtohaveacollegedegreeandtohavegonetolawschoolforthreeyears.Moststatesrequirelawyerswhoarepracticingwithintheir jurisdiction to be licensed by the relevant state authority.Licensurecomesafterthelawyerhassuccessfullypassedabarexaminationthatisadministeredbyabodyauthorizedbythe state.Lawyerswhorepresentprisonersofwarneedtobeexperienced in handling international criminal cases, and theyshould be conversant with international law. Some of the fieldsofstudythatmaybehelpfultothemincludeinternationalrelations, history, and others. In addition, they shouldunderstandtheforeignpoliciesofthecountriesinvolved,andtheyshouldbereadytotravelasneededforthepurposeof gatheringevidencetoexoneratetheirclients.
