German Coordination Palestine IsraelEmail: kontakt@kopi-online.de    Dear Maestro Josep Carreras,We are writing in advance of your planned performance in the State of Israel. As you certainly knowfrom previous letters to you signed by different organizations, the State of Israel has for decadesviolated international law and human rights and rejected appeals by the United Nations to adhere tosuch norms.We assume that you know about:
the ongoing siege of Gaza, which prevents 1,4 million people of enjoying their basic needs;
the apartheid wall, which separates entire cities, families and people from each other;
the occupation, which prevents the free movement of the Palestinian population in their ownhomeland;
Israeli laws, which discriminate against Palestinian citizens;
the imprisonment by Israel with no due process of thousands of Palestinians and human rightsdefenders;
the confiscation of Palestinian land by the Israeli authorities;
the illegal Israeli settlement activities on Palestinian land;
and Israel’s refusal to recognize the right of Palestinian refugees to return to their erstwhilehomes, villages and towns, because they are not Jews.We also assume that you know about the central role played by the cultural boycott of South Africa indefeating the apartheid regime.Our campaign is conducted in support of the Palestinian call for an international boycott on allinstitutions that participate in and sustain the Israeli apartheid system.We urge you, respectfully, not to perform in Israel, in order to contribute to international efforts thataim to end the immoral and illegal policies by the State of Israel, policies that are incompatible withbasic ethical norms and are condemned by the overwhelming majority of UN member states.We persevere in our belief that you can and should reflect upon your responsibility in this matter andopt to stand on the side of those who desperately need our collective solidarity. We therefore urge youto cancel your concert in Israel. As an outstanding musician your decision can contribute to the end of an unjust regime of oppression and for a just peace in Palestine/Israel.Kind regards,German Coordination Palestine Israelon behalf of the following organizations and individuals
