 The 

economy of China is the third largest in the world, after the United


States and Japan , GDP (PPP)$8.767 trillion GDP (nominal) $$4.911
 China could overtake Japan as the world's second-largest economy in
2010, one year before Goldman Sachs (GS.N) Chief Economist Jim
O'Neill had previously expected.
 It’s on track to pass United States by 2020.
 Foreign Policy magazine cite: that by 2040, the Chinese economy will
reach $123 trillion, or nearly three times the economic output of the entire
globe in 2000. China's per capita income will hit $85,000. How realistic
is that?
 WTO reported that China is world's second largest trading power behind
the US with a total international trade of US$2.21 trillion – US$1.20
trillion in exports (#1) and US$1.01 trillion in imports (#2).
 foreign exchange reserves have reached US$2.4 trillion, making it by far the
world's largest. It is among the world's favorite destination for FDI, attracting more
than US$80 billion in 2007 alone

the best rate of growth by far among emerging nations and dwarfs mature,
developed economies around the world
 China overtook Germany as the world's largest exporter in 2009.

 Total vehicle production and sales across the country reached 1.61 million and
1.66 million respectively in January, up 143 percent and 124 percent from a year
earlier, the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers said.
 Sales of cars, sports-utility vehicles, and multi-purpose vehicles also hit a new
monthly record of 1.32 million units last month, with strong growth of 113 percent
over last year, said the association. Almost half of the sales, 650,000 units, were
made by homegrown brands.
 Statistics from CAAM confirmed last month that China had overtaken the United
States to become the world's top auto maker and market in 2009 with annual sales
reaching 13.64 million units. Output reached 13.79 million units last year.
 China expect that auto market will grow to 15 million units in 2010
 China's auto export in 2009 dropped 46 percent year-on-year due to the global
downturn, according to the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers.
 Housing prices in China's 70 large and medium-sized cities rose 9.5 percent in
January 2010 from a year earlier, up 1.3 percent compared to the previous month,
said the National Bureau of Statistics.
 December 2009, China  launched what it described as the world’s fastest train
service covering a distance of 1,068 km at the average speed  350 km an hour.

 China is set to build a network of 42 high-speed railways, with a total length
of 13,000 km (8,078 miles) by 2012. China has unveiled a massive rail
development program, considered to be the world’s biggest plan outside
the United States. The goal is to take the rail network from the current 86,000
kilometers to 120,000 kilometers.
 The Expressway Network of Chinas one of the longest in the world. The
network is also known as National Trunk Highway System . The total length
of China's expressways is 60,300 km the world's second longest only after
the United States and roughly equals that in Canada, Germany, and France
combined. In 2008, 6,433 km of expressways were added to the network.

 With 2.3 million active troops, the People's Liberation Army is the largest military
in the world
 The PLA consists of an army, navy, air force, and strategic nuclear force. The
official announced budget of the PLA for 2009 was $70 billion. However, the
United States claims China does not report its real military spending. The
real Chinese military budget for 2008 could be anywhere from US$105 to US$150
billion
 China, with possession of nuclear weapons and delivery systems, is considered a
major military regional power and an emerging military superpower.
 In late December 2008 and early January 2009, there were multiple reports of
China building two conventionally powered aircraft carriers displacing 50,000–
60,000 tones, possibly to be launched in 2015, and there have been press reports
suggesting China's intention to build aircraft carriers.
 The US Defense Department reported in early 2009 that 
China's navy will develop a new generation of warships and aircraft to give it
much longer-range capabilities
  China military has purchased state-of-the-art fighter jets from Russia, such as
the Sukhoi Su-30s, and has also produced its own modern fighters, specifically
the Chinese J-10s and the J-11
 Chinas’s commander-in-chief said in comments published Thursday April 16
2009. Admiral Wu Shengli told the state-run China Daily newspaper that the
Chinese navy wanted to develop hardware such as large combat warships, stealth
submarines with abilities to travel further and supersonic cruise aircraft. More
accurate long-range missiles, deep-sea torpedoes and a general upgrade
of information technology , according to Wu. “The navy will establish a maritime
defense system that corresponds with the need to protect China's maritime
security and economic development
 Chinese Difence Minister Liang Guanglie was quoted in state media in March
2009 saying China no longer wanted to be the only major global power without
an aircraft carrier.
 In 1992, the Shenzhou manned spaceflight program was authorized. Shenzhou
5 was launched on 15 October 2003,carrying Chinese astronaut Yang Liwei,
making the PRC the third country to put a human being into space through its own
endeavors. China completed its second manned mission with a crew of
two, Shenzhou 6 in October 2005. In 2008, China successfully completed
the Shenzhou 7mission, making it the third country to have the capability to
conduct a spacewalk. The country plans to build a Chinese Space Station in the
near future and achieve a lunar landing in the next decade.
 China has the world's second largest research and development budget, and is
expected to invest over $136 billion in 2006 after growing more than 20% in 2005
the past year.The Chinese government continues to place heavy emphasis on
research and development by creating greater public awareness of innovation, and
reforming financial and tax systems to promote growth in cutting-edge industries.
 China make the transition from a manufacturing-based economy to an
innovation-based one and the National People's Congress have approved
large increases in research funding. Stem cell research and gene therapy,
which some in the Western world see as controversial, face minimal
regulation in China. China has an estimated 926,000 researchers, second
only to the 1.3 million in the United States
 China is also actively developing its
software, semiconductor and energy industries, including renewable
energies such as hydro, wind and solar power
