Export Potential Of
Leather Sector
The Indian leather industry has made
significant progresses during the past
two decades due to strong raw-material
base and large reservoir of traditionally
skilled and competitive labor force.

Leather goods production capacity is estimated to
be 63 million pieces annually.  

The different types of Leather Goods and


accessories are manufactured in India

Most of the units manufacturing leather goods are


located in Kolkata, Chennai, Mumbai, Kanpur,
Bangalore and Pondicherry. 
Raw Material Supplies For
Leather Industry
There exists a large raw material base. There is a
population of 194 million cattle, 70 million buffaloes and
95 million goats.
According to the latest census, India ranks first among
the major livestock holding countries in the world.
In respect of sheep with 48 million sheep, it claims the
sixth position.
These four species provide the basic raw material for the
leather industry.

Industry
Prominence in the Indian leather sector.
Entered the world market only in the mid-
eighties with exports of Rs. 15 crores in 1997-
98, account for about Rs. 1530 crore in 1997-
98.
Major export destination of leather
garments from India is Germany.
Market share of about 20%.
Leather Gloves
India produces about 52 million pairs of industrial
gloves annually.
India’s share in global leather gloves import
during 2008 was 9.52%.

India’s export of leather gloves increased from


US$ 118.77 million in 2004 to US$ 232.05 million
in 2008, growing at a CAGR of 18.22%. 
Indian Leather Gloves are engineered to provide
long lasting comfort and protection. 
Export Licensing
De-reservation of 11 items in leather sector.

Non-small scale units can manufacture


these items after obtaining industrial license,
which is granted subject to an export
obligation of 50%of the production in each
year.
National Leather Development
Program (NLDP)
A UNDP assisted National Leather Development
Programme (NLDP Phase-I)has been executed by the
Department from1992 to 1998.

UNDP contribution - US $ 17 million.

Government of India funding - US $ 11.065 million.


Integrated development.

The present UNDP allocation towards the SIDE-NLDP


is US$ 7.15 million.

Global import of Leather Goods including Gloves
increased from US$ 10786.59 million in 2004 to
US$ 18034.94 million in 2008
During 2008, the India’s share in the global
leather goods & accessories import is 4.84%.
The Global import of Leather Goods including
Gloves increased from US$8020.61 million in 2002
to US$13675.50 million in 2006
 India’s share remains stagnant at 5.16%.
