An Assessment of Report Records Management Programs in the Federal Government by the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA). Published February 22, 2011.
This report, based on yearly agency self-assessments, reveals that records at 95 percent of federal agencies are at a high or moderate risk of being improperly destroyed. E-mail management continues to be the most troubling records management issue, and the report identifies training – particularly for senior officials – as another critical weakness.
The report is based on self-assessments NARA sent to 270 federal agencies. Most responded, but several, including the General Services Administration (GSA), the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, the Office of Special Counsel, and the Inspector General offices at the Department of Commerce and Department of Transportation, failed to respond at all. Others, like the White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB), missed NARA’s response deadline. The failures of GSA and OMB are particularly disturbing, as both agencies bear at least some responsibility for records management throughout the federal government.
