ARTIFICIAL SKIN GRAFTING

Presented By:
GIRISH ARORA
INTRODUCTION
• Our skin is a major organ of the body that acts as a
barrier to pathogens and trauma.

• Skin grafting is a surgical procedure by which skin

or skin substitute is placed over a burn or non-
healing wound to permanently replace damaged or
missing skin .

• Wounds such as third-degree burns must be covered

as quickly as possible to prevent infection or loss of
fluid.
HEALTHY SKIN STRUCTURE
TYPES OF GRAFTS

•Split-Thickness Grafts-
A split-thickness skin graft
involves the epidermis and a little
of the underlying dermis
•Full-Thickness Grafts
These grafts involve both layers
of the skin

•Composite grafts
•This is a combination of skin
and fat; skin and cartilage; or
dermis and fat, which are used in
areas that require three-
dimensionality

PROCESS
MAJOR METHODS FOR
MANUFACTURING ARTIFICIAL
SKIN

• Mesh scaffolding method

• Collagen method
MESH SCAFFOLDING METHOD

•Fibroblasts are thawed and expanded

•Cells are transferred to a culture system
•Growth cycle completion
COLLAGEN METHOD

•Cells are transferred to a culture system

•Keratinocytes are added.
•Growth cycle completion.
POSSIBLE COMPLICATIONS

•Bleeding
•Graft failure
•Infection in either the donor or recipient site
•Distorted healing
•Collection of serum under the recipient site that prevents
growth of new blood vessels
•Increase or decrease sensation in the recipient site
•Lack of graft adherence in recipient area
•Hair may not grow on recipient site
