STATE OF THE STATES
Each year, we are making progress state by state and law by law towarda more pro-life America. In 2010 alone, there were more than 50 life-afrming measures enacted by the states. This is especially notable given theeconomic and political turmoil we, as a nation, have endured over the pastyear. It is incredibly gratifying to see that economic and other pressing issueshave not deterred state lawmakers and everyday Americans from seeking toadvance and restore a culture of life.Recognizing the signicance of state laws in protecting women and the un-born from the negative impact of abortion; in establishing legal recognition of and protection for unborn children in contexts other than abortion; in prohibit-ing the illicit use of emerging biotechnologies; in afrming the constitutionalrights of healthcare providers; and in protecting those at the end of life, AULhas compiled an individual report card on the life-afrming laws in each of the 50 states and the District of Columbia. These report cards summarize and highlight existing state laws on abortion, legal protection and recognition of the unborn, bioethics and biotechnologies, healthcare rights of conscience, and the end of life, as well as note criticalgaps in legal protection. They also specically discuss advances that havebeen made in each state over the past year.We have also formulated specic recommendations for each state, allowingcitizens, lawmakers, and others to readily assess each state’s progress and todevelop a plan to further protect life in their state. In each checklist, we havemade specic recommendations as to what are the best next steps towardreversing Roe v. Wade, protecting the unborn, and restoring a culture of life.We hope these report cards stir both thought and action intended to bring uscloser to the day when every personfrom conception until natural deathiswelcomed in life and protected in law!
