elcome to the Alaska Attorney General’s consumer protection web site. Theweb site offers resources and information to help Alaskan consumers in makingwise purchasing decisions and avoid becoming victims of consumer fraud. Thesite also includes information and forms for businesses and organizations(telemarketers,charitable organizations, paid solicitors, andsellers of business opportunities) that are required to register with the Department before conductingbusiness in the state.
The Attorney General'sRole in ConsumerProtection
The Consumer Protection Unit ofthe Attorney General’s Officeinvestigates unfair or deceptivebusiness practices and files legalactions on behalf of the State ofAlaska to stop such practices. TheConsumer Protection Unit alsoengages in informal mediation ofconsumer complaints, educates thepublic about consumer issues,proposes legislation andregulations regarding trade andbusiness practices, enforcesantitrust laws, and registerstelemarketers,charitableorganizations, paid solicitors, andsellers of business opportunities.If you feel you have been the victimof an unfair or deceptive businesspractice, we encourage you tofile aconsumer complaint. We are oftenable resolve consumer disputes bynotifying businesses of complaintsand engaging in informal mediation. But the primary goal of the complaint processis to help us identify business practices that may harm Alaskan consumers.Because we cannot investigate every complaint, we focus our investigative andenforcement activity on complaints that reflect a pattern or practice of unfairnessor deception substantially affecting the public interest.Although we informally mediate consumer complaints, we do not provide legalrepresentation to consumers.
