Herearesomebasicpostmodernideastogetusstarted.Postmodernmediarejectstheideathatanymediaproductortextisofanygreatervaluethananother.Alljudgementsofvaluearemerelytaste.Anythingcanbeart,anythingcandeservetoreachanaudience,andculture'eatsitself'asthereisnolongeranythingnewtoproduceordistribute.Thedistinctionbetweenmediaandrealityhascollapsed,andwenowliveina'realitydefinedbyimagesandrepresentations-astateofsimulacrum.Imagesrefertoeachotherandrepresenteachotherasrealityratherthansomepurerealitythatexistsbeforetheimagerepresentsit-thisisthestateofhyperreality.Allideasofthetruth'arejustcompetingclaims-ordiscourses-andwhatwebelievetobethetruthatanypointismerelythe'winning'discourse.Therearemanymediaexamplesoftextsorproductswhichdeliberatelysetouttoexploreandplaywiththisstateofhyperreality.Thesetextsaresaidtobeintertextualandself-referential-theybreaktherulesofrealismtoexplorethenatureoftheirownstatusasconstructedtexts.Inotherwords,theyseeknottorepresentreality,buttorepresentmediareality.Exampleswhichwewilllookatarethetelevisedimagesofthe
