1. LATE MR. ARATHOON
The mail last week brought the sad news of Mr. Arathoon’sdeath. Mr. Arathoon in his capacity as the honorary secretary of theEast India Association served it for a number of years faithfully andwell. As Editor of
The Asiatic Quarterly Review,
his work is known toall who have any connection with India. But he is best known toIndians in South Africa for his very great sympathy for them and theconstant attention he gave to the question in connection with theAssociation, with which he was so closely identified. He never missedan opportunity of bringing it to the notice of the Association, andthereby to that of the authorities. He rendered very valuable assistanceto the deputation last year by his whole-hearted co-operation. Wetender our condolences to Mr. Arathoon’s family.

2. VOLKSRUST CASES
The cases instituted in Volksrust against Mr. Mahomed Essakand other Indians deserve attention. Originally, it was the intention of the Government to frame the charge under the new law, but it lostnerve at the last moment and the case was brought up under the PeacePreservation Ordinance. Mr. Mahomed Essak having taken the lead, others too could follow. He has saved the honour of the Konkanis. Noone would now be justified in blaming the Konkanis. The magistratedischarged Mr. Mahomed Essak, holding that he was entitled underhis permit to reside in the Colony. These cases have brought out the courage of the people. It wasgood that no bail was offered. It was also good that those arrestedincluded people from all communities. This case reveals the extreme weakness of the Government. TheGovernment is demoralized. It does not know what to do. Itscondition is like that of an angry man who has started raving. It wouldbe to our advantage if there were still more cases like this.If the Government were really strong, it would arrest the peoplein the Transvaal who are opposing the law. That it is not able to do.Hence it is trying desperately to stop the people from coming fromoutside. The Government cannot but be defeated in such an attempt. For, there is a big loophole in the new law.[From Gujarati]
