Wexler:
Hi, I'm Jessica Wexler, and I'm a strongsupporter of the FairTax. I have volunteered withFairTax KC for the past year, and have organizeda manual to be used by FairTax-supporters acrossthe country.I am also a Democrat.

Wexler:
I have worked 20-hour days, seven daysa week, for months at a time. I have slept onoffice floors with blankets pulled from the trunksof volunteers' cars. During Sen. McCaskill'scampaign I learned the benefit of a union hall withshowers - even if they were located behind a door marked "Men." On November 4th, while pollswere closing, and parties were starting, I was stillat President Obama's "Reichtown" [sp] officeworking to ensure every vote was counted. I'veorganized teachers in New Orleans, and registeredvoters through "Rock the Vote."I have been in favor of FairTax for several years.Ever since my uncle... for those of you who don'thim he is a FairTax KC leader... gave me a small,paperback book to read.My uncle and I disagree on
all 
the major "hot-button" issues: From abortion to gun rights,Social Security to the death penalty. To sum itup......we disagree on
how
the government should
spend 
our money; we are in
complete agreement 
on how the government should
collect 
those taxes- the FairTax!

Wexler:
I am here to speak about (1) why I, aDemocrat, support the FairTax, (2) why other Democrats
must 
support the FairTax, and (3)why it's crucial that the FairTax [be understoodas a] non-partisan issue, both on a local[Missouri state FairTax initiative] and nationalscale.My top three reasons for supporting theFairTax:(1) It will
increase jobs
(2)
Widen
our 
tax base
, and(3) Give
me
control over the money
I earn
.

Wexler:
The FairTax increases jobs byeliminating some of the major reasons, such ascapital gains and corporate income taxes, thatcaused - and continue to cause - U.S. companiesto leave the U.S. The FairTax...
Audience:

Wexler:
The FairTax widens our tax base.Under the FairTax:• People making money from
criminal activities
, such as drugs,
[will] pay taxes
.•
Illegal immigrants
 
[will] pay taxes
.• People being paid
"under the table" [will] paytaxes
.
 
FairTax supporters may not agree on how Congress spends money, but they do agree onhow that money should be collected.Reason No. 1 to support the FairTax: Jobs!Taxing business income has only increased consumer prices and driven jobs offshore.Reason No. 2 to support the FairTax: Abroader, less-volatile tax base. (Consumptiondecreases less, during recessionary times,than does Income.)

loopholes
in our current [income tax] system
[will] pay taxes
.• Everyone in the U.S. who buys anything new

With the FairTax, I will finally havecontrol over 
my
money. Managing a non-profit, inKansas City, earning $30,000 a year, I wasbringing home $418 a week. With the FairTax inplace, I will be bringing home my entire paycheck of $576 a week.

(Whistles, applause)
Wexler:
That's an increase of $632 per month,totaling $8,216 for the year. A college graduatewith $21,000 in student loans would be able topay off those loans within three years using onlythe increase in salary. I will no longer have towait a year to receive a refund on the money Iearned, that the government borrowed interest-free. My money will be there
every
payday.

Wexler:
Fellow Democrats
must 
support theFairTax. It:•
simplifies our tax system
,•
boosts our economy
, and• is far 
more progressive than our current [income tax] system
. We
all 
agree that our current [income tax] systemis complex and hard-to-understand - with over 70,000 pages of tax code. According to MoneyMagazine, 99 percent of us will pay a taxprofessional to file an incorrect [income] taxreturn.Democrats want a simplified tax system; theFairTax
is the
simplified tax system:• Pay a tax once, on new [retail] itemspurchased – 
that’s it!
 • By
anything 
 
used 
- clothing, books, car, house- there is
no
federal tax.

Wexler:
The FairTax will boost our economy ina number of ways. The
most important 
way, dueto our current unemployment, is
it will createjobs
.There is over $13 trillion in off-shore accounts.The FairTax will bring back an estimated $2 to$3 trillion, in the first year alone, to be investedhere at home.

Wexler:
The third reason why Democrats mustsupport the FairTax is that it is far more
progressive
. Under the FairTax, low-incomehouseholds experience 5 times the benefitincrease, as do high-income households. Thisgives them a greater opportunity to move up theeconomic "ladder" and achieve the "Americandream."

It is
crucial 
that the FairTax have
non
-partisan support. On the national level,
theFairTax can not pass without bi-partisansupport 
. Our current Senate [111th Congress2008-10] is made up of 57 Democrats, 2Independents, and 40 Republicans. The House
 
Reason No. 3 to support the FairTax:Restores our control of our paychecks;benefits government only as we prosper, asevidenced by our ability to spend actual wealth. (We’re taxed only on spending abovepoverty level).FairTax collection will be less expensive,much less burdensome and intrusive onaverage Americans, and more efficient.
