While the general goal of the research was to improve the quality of
teaching folktales by the use of VCDs at State SMP 2, Cangkringan, Sleman,
Yogyakarta so that the students’ ability to appreciate tales, their interest and
motivation for learning also improved, the specific goals were: (1) to describe the
use of VCDs in the teaching of tales to students of Grade VII A of the above
mentioned school, (2) to improve the students’ ability to appreciate tales through
VCDs, (3) to raise the students’ interest and motivation in studying tales through
VCDs, and (4) to improve the students’ability in discovering the values that the
tales contain and put them into practice in daily life.
The research was a type of classroom action research (CAR), therefore the
data gathering and analysis were done by using an analytical technique of critical
model with the following steps: plan, action, observation, and reflection. The
subjects of the research were the students of Grade VII A and Indonesian teacher
of State SMP 2 Cangkringan, Sleman, Yogyakarta. The CAR was carried out in
August – December 2005. It was collaborative in nature involving the class
teacher as a researcher. Hence, the teacher was not merely an object, but also a
participant in the research right from the beginning through the whole process, i.e.
identifying the problems, formally stating them, planning, acting, and evaluating
the results.
In line with the general goal mentioned above, an important thing to do in
order to improve the quality of the students’ ability in appreciating folktales was
the use of VCDs in teaching folktales. Three cycles were employed in the
research.
After utilizing the three cycles above, we achieved the specific goals of the
research. Briefly they were the following. Firstly, the students’ appreciation of
folktales improved. This was indicated in (1) expressing the intrinsic elements of
folktales, (2) retelling folktales, (3) grasping the significance and the moral values
of folktales, and (4) giving comments on the presentations of the tasks set by the
teacher. Secondly, the students’ interest in and motivation for the teaching of
folktales by the use of VCDs improved. This was reflected in (1) the classroom
atmosphere was alive since the students were improved in the learning process.
This was evident in the fact that the students actively responded to the teacher’s
questions/tasks, (2) the teaching and learning process was a two – way
communication involving discussions, (3) the students gained some experience in
appreciating folktales by discovering the significance and moral values of
iii
folktales, (4) the students did not seem to have a burden in attending the folktales
class. The students anthusiastically participated in the class discussions.
The observation of the processes in the teaching of tales revealed that
VCDs, as a teaching medium, could improve the quality of teaching particularly
in creating an enjoyful atmosphere for learning, which in turns would raise the
students’ ability to appreciate literature, especially tales. Watching contextualized
models in the VCDs could help the students grasp the messages that the tales
contain. It was recommended then that the cycle model of teaching with the use of
VCDs be applied at the school for teaching tales in particular, and for teaching
literature in general.
