“Isabel (gavota)” is a composition by the Paraguayan guitarist-composer Augustin Pio Barrios Mangore (1885-
1944). Isabel is the name of the mother of Barrios’s first child in 1912, and the probable dedicatee of the piece. (A
drawing of Isabel Barrios appears on the next page, courtesy of Barrios expert Cesar Amaro). No manuscript of this
piece has ever been found. Barrios recorded the piece on the Atlanta-Artigas label in 1913, however the recording
was lost for many years until it was discovered in Buenos Aires by Barrios expert Federico Sheppard in 2008. This
is a transcription of that recording.
Guitarists and audiences will find the piece interesting as it uses an unconventional technique of using the left hand
thumb over the fingerboard to fret notes. Guitar students of Barrios Mangore have often commented on his unusual
playing techniques. The piece uses a descending glissando/portamento effect, similar to another piece he recorded in
the same year, his famous humoristic tango “Bicho Feo,” which I also transcribed.
I first performed “Isabel (gavota)” on February 26, 2011, in a concert presented by the Austin Classical Guitar
Society, which I believe was the post-Barrios world premiere performance of the piece. The piece was well-
received, and the audience was very happy to hear a newly-discovered piece composed by Barrios Mangore. In the
spirit of Mangore, who often gave away his music for free, this transcription is free to anyone and everyone.
