TheRussianModel1891Mosin-Nagantbolt-actionriflewasamongtheearliestmilitaryfirearmsdesigned
to
usesmokelesspowdercartridges.BothriflesandcarbinesusingthedesignbyImperialRussianArmyColonelSergeMoisinandBelgianarmsmakerEmileNaganthavebeenmanufacturedinChina,Finland,France,NorthKorea,Russia,SwitzerlandandtheUnitedStates,andremainedinmilitaryserviceatvariousplacesaroundtheworldformorethan60years.Earlymodelsfeaturedoctagonal-shapedreceivers,whilelatermodelshadroundreceivers.Mosin-Nagantriflesarecharacterizedbytheirmassive,almostungainlyactionwhichincludesanintegralfive-round,single-columnfixedmagazine.Simplicityofdesignandoperationhelpedmakethesesomeofthemost"soldier-proof'bolt-actionmilitaryriflesevermade.AcartridgeinterrupterinthemagazinedesignhelpedmaketheMosin-Nagantthemostpositive-feedingofanydesignwhichusesrimmedammunition.BecausetheMosin-Nagantdesignwasusedsowidelyandforsolong,therearemanydifferentsub-mod-elswithvariousbarrellengthsandfeatures,buttheactionisessen-tiallythesameonall.AmmunitionfortheMosin-Nagantriflesisdes-ignated7.62x54R.The7.62indicatestheborediameterinmillime-ters(.30-caliber).The54indicatesthelengthofthecartridgeinmil-limeters,andthe"R"indicatesitisarimmedcase.ThesafetyonMosin-Nagantrifleslocksthecockingpieceattherearoftheboltontotheleftrearofthereceiver.Whenacti-vated,thesafetylockstheboltclosedandpreventsthestrikerfrommovingforward.Toactivatethesafety,pullrearward
