EDUCATOR IN
THE MANAGEMENT OF
DIABETES

Introduction
• DM chronic life long disease with varied
acute and chronic complication.
• Education is not just a part of diabetes
treatment; it is the treatment (WHO)
• Diabetes educator who could be nurse,
dietitian, social worker, qualified
diabetes educator etc …
Need for education
• Need more diabetes educator to serve
• At least up to 30 – 40% of people can be
reached
Main aims of diabetes educator
• To change behavior of people
• Promote self management
Objective for continuing education

• To increase
– Participant’s knowledge
– Skill
– flexibility

• Intrinsic motivation
– Related to the life and personality of the
individual and this is more powerful and
longer lasting.

• Extrinsic motivation
– Constituted by reward, threat or pressure on
the individual from outside and this can
easily be offered by the diabetic clinic
Advantages in building motivation

• Self-confidence in patient
• Independence and flexibility of life style
• Ensuring better compliance to treatment
• Facilitating decision making on the part
of the patient
Basic goals of a diabetes educator
• To develop acceptance of the disease
• To educate the patient about the disease
• To realize the importance of the diet regulation,
exercise, treatment with pill or insulin
injection, monitoring diabetes control
• To make the patient more and more
independent in taking their own decision
regarding treatment.
Approaches to diabetes education
• One to one education
• Group education
• Inter-group discussion, conferences
• Visiting nurse, social workers
• Placards, pictures and paintings
• Printed literature leaflets, pamphlets,
magazines and books.
• Audio tapes, video tapes
• Camps
• Public awareness programmes
Evaluation
• Objective have been achieved
• Assessment –
– in term their impact on patient
understanding on diabetes or treatment
– the degree of diabetic control
– ability of the program to reduce the
morbidity and mortality
Self management
• Mean a person can be independent and
participate safely in a wide variety of
activities while living with diabetes
