The Benefits

of
Cool Roofs

www.JimSimcoe.com
What are Cool Roofs?
A roofing system that allows for high solar
reflectance and thermal emittance, reducing heat
transfer to the building and thus reducing costs of air
conditioning within the home. It is one of the most
energy-efficient measures for sunny climates and an
extremely durable and affordable option for any roof
type.

Benefits
• Save on annual electricity bills by reducing summer air
conditioning costs.

• Save peak electricity demand costs for time-of-use metering

(typical for commercial properties).

• Reduce roof maintenance and replacement expenses by

extending roof life.

• Reduce air pollution and smog formation.

• Reduce roofing waste added to landfills.

White Vinyl Roofs
• White vinyl roofs achieve some of the highest reflectance and
emitting measurements of which roofing materials are
capable.

• Thermoplastic white vinyl can reflect 80%+ of the sun’s rays

and emit 70%+ of solar radiation absorbed by the building.

• An asphalt roof only reflects between 6% and 26% of solar

radiation, resulting in greater heat transfer to the building and
thus greater demand for air conditioning.

Roof Coatings
• Applying a solar reflective coating is a great way to make an
existing or new roof reflective.

• Costs vary greatly depending on location and local circumstances.

• Ceramic coatings are the most well known, providing an average

reflectance of 75% to 85%.

• High performance nanotechnology heat reflective paints are the

most innovative in this field, reflecting up to 95% of solar
radiations, reducing heat load by 30% in hot weather.
