NEW DELHI: If you're environmentally conscious in life, how about the after-life?
Eight Indian cities will now get cremation systems in Oil and Natural Gas
Corporation's Harit Moksha (Green Heaven) initiative.
With two lakh hectares of forest area being felled annually just for burning bodies in
the rites of death, the Harit Moksha systems, which promise to use 60 per cent less
wood, could be significant. So far ONGC plans to set up 30 units in eight cities ²
including ten in Mumbai and six in Delhi ² at a cost of Rs.9.19 crore in collaboration
with an NGO, Mokshda Paryavaran Evam Van Suraksha Samiti.³These units need to
be installed on a large enough scale to make a difference,´ said Union Environment
Minister Jairam Ramesh inaugurating the venture on Thursday. He admitted that he
had initially supported the use of electric crematoria, an idea which had not found
many takers.
Mr. Ramesh welcomed ONGC's corporate social responsibility (CSR) efforts and
suggested that the public service undertaking spend its surplus CSR budget of Rs. 200
crore by partnering with his Ministry's afforestation efforts.
³If I can get five PSUs like yours, I have my entire Rs.1,000 crore budget,´ he said.
The Samiti, which will implement the project on a turnkey basis over the next three
years, estimates that it would help in saving 13,700 tonnes of wood and reduce
greenhouse gas emissions by 26,500 tonnes every year. Air and river pollution would
also be reduced.
Mr. Ramesh was not averse to eliciting some wry political laughs from his audience.
As he prepared to leave for the meeting of the Group of Ministers on Coal to discuss
the controversial issue of coal mining in heavily forested areas, he quipped that ³many
people at the meeting would be hoping that I would be the first candidate for this Harit
Moksha, and hoping to get rid of the Harit Mantralaya.´

NEW DELHI: The State-run Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) has joined
hands with the Wildlife Trust of India (WTI) to come to the rescue of the endangered
sub-species of the eastern swamp deer.
The conservation programme was launched at the Kaziranga National Park in Assam.
All of the 681 remaining eastern swamp deer in the world can only be found at the
park. The animal, earlier found in Pakistan and Bangladesh, has become extinct in
these two countries. The number of this herbivore is far lesser than that of the Royal
Bengal tiger or the greater one-horned rhinoceros.
The Kaziranga National Park has the world's highest concentration of tigers (32 per
100 sq. km). It also houses 55 per cent of the one-horned rhinos in the world and 80
per cent of the Asiatic water buffaloes.
According to ONGC officials, the aim of the initiative is to assist the Assam Forest
Department in the long-term conservation of the eastern swamp deer with an
assistance of Rs.85 lakh. ³Initially, the project will run for three years, and if it
becomes successful it will be extended to other protected areas,´ said ONGC General
Manager (CSR) S. Gopinath.
The project entails assessing population dynamics, threats and factors limiting the
deer's growth and distribution for implementing a conservation strategy. This includes
the creation of new viable populations outside the park, if necessary.
Epidemic insurance
Epidemic insurance for the swamp deer is a vital component of the project. ³Diseases
transmitted from the livestock could be disastrous for this population. Besides, a
single population is prone to the effects of inbreeding ² depression, making it more
vulnerable,´ said WTI executive trustee P.C. Bhattacharjee.
RAJAHMUNDRY: Enriching the lives of the people and society wherever it works is
the guiding philosophy of ONGC's Corporate Social Responsibility, said Dr. A.K.
Balyan, Director-Human Resources and Business Development, New Delhi.
He inaugurated a bread-making unit for the women prisoners of Special Prison for
Women in Rajahmundry Central Jail on Monday. The visiting director was
accompanied by Mr. J.A. Kumar, General Manager, Human Resources.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Balyan said that the ONGC was keen and proud to
associate with projects which help in rehabilitation of jail inmates.
He urged the jail authorities to submit sustainable project for the perusal of ONGC
management.
The bread-making unit was proposed by the jail authorities. It would become self-
sustaining within a short time.
The produced bread would be supplied to government hospital, Central Jail besides
serving the need of inmates of the special prison for women. Training on bread-
making would be provided for 35 inmates serving life imprisonment and for 15 long
term prisoners. On this occasion sweets were distributed to the inmates and their
children. Earlier ONGC Rajahmundry Asset has aided a tailoring unit for the women
prisoners under CSR initiatives. R. Sharada, Superintendent of the Women Jail was
also present on the occasion.
Girls who are undergoing training with the support of the ONGC in a hotel in
Rajahmundry.
One such programme has lighted up the faces of 25 poor and downtrodden girls of the
Konaseema area. The girls from Katrenikona, Razole and Uppalaguptam, aged between 18
and 22, have been able to get a livelihood in Rajahmundry, thanks to the training imparted
by the CARE Educational Society under the Women Entrepreneurship Programme. The
programme is envisaged to impart training in hospitality industry at the lower level.
³We have selected 30 girls from the poorer sections of society in the ONGC operational
area. We have given them three months training in hotel management at the lower level,´
says G. Anil Kumar, Director, CARE.
For one month, they have been trained in house keeping, servicing, food and beverages,
front office operations and basic communications skills. On-job training has been imparted
for two months.
Sudhamani, a former faculty member in the Reddy's Foundation, has imparted coaching to
these girls. Anand Regency, Hotel River Bay and Godavari Heights have selected these
girls for in-house training, during which period they will be provided food too. The
remaining girls will also find placement soon, Mr. Anil Kumar says.
The ONGC is providing Rs.2.10 lakhs to the NGO for the programme. ³This is an
experiment. We will extend the programme if it succeeds in all aspects,´ say A.A. Khan,
Executive Director, Rajahmundry Asset, ONGC, and J.A. Kumar, General Manager.
Bonthu Nagalakshmi is one of the five girls who, on completion of in-house training, has
landed job. Daughter of a farm labourer at Chinagadavalli panchayat in Uppalaguptam
mandal, she says: ³I do not know that a wide range of dishes are available. At home, we
just prepare payasam and vada on festive occasions. Now, I am proud and confident that I
have got a job with a pay of Rs. 3,000. This apart, I am being provided food and
accommodation.´
