WHAT IS WAGE DIFFERENTIAL
 Wage differential refers to differences in wage rates due
to the location of company, hours of work, working
conditions, type of product manufactured, or other
factors.
 It may be the difference in wages between workers with
different skills working in the same industry or workers
with similar skills working in different industries or
regions.

 Inter-firm differentials
 Intra-area or regional differentials
 Inter-industry differentials
 Personal wage differentials
OCCUPATIONAL WAGE
DIFFERENTIALS
 It can be done on the basis of different qualification,
skills degree, and responsibility require for a occupation.
 But why????

1. To induce workers to undertake “more


demanding”, “more risky” jobs.
2. Encourage workers to develop skills in anticipation
of higher earnings in future.
3. To perform social function by way of determining
the social status of workers.
INTER-FIRM DIFFERENTIALS
 It reflect the relative wage levels of workers in different
plants in the same area and occupation.
 Causes of the this differentials

1.Difference in the quality of labor employed by


different firms.
2. Imperfections in the labour market.
3.Difference in the efficiency of equipment,
supervision.
REGIONAL DIFFERENTIALS
 Differentials Workers in same industry and the same
occupational group, but living in different geographical
areas, are paid different wages.
 It affects the supply of manpower of various plants in
different regions.
 It arises due to cost of living, working conditions,
climate etc.
INTER-INDUSTRY DIFFERENTIALS
 it arises when the workers in the same occupation and in
the same area but in different industries are paid different
wages.
 It reflects skill differentials.

 Factors influencing this wage differentials

1. Extent of unionization
2. Employers ability to pay/ product demand in market
3. Provides opportunity for workers to switch to higher
wage industries.
PERSONAL WAGE
DIFFERENTIALS
 It arises because of differences in personal
characteristics (age or sex) of workers who work in the
same plant and the same occupation. 
 Examples – in such occupation women workers paid less
than male workers.
