Keepsake

Keepsake is a short story that was submitted to the 2011 Baen Memorial Writing Contest. It explores a tween’s perspective of space and her conflict with the rather mature notion of “for the betterment of mankind”. The story also addresses an ethical dilemma concerning artificial intelligence and the problem of preserving relationships over extended duration spaceflight. But really it’s just a story about a mother and her daughter, and the vast distances of space, ambition, and selflessness between them.
