Haraya: Why and what is Urag-Urag?
Richard Madrilejos: Why Urag – Urag? One meaning of Urag –
Urag that we had associated in English is enthusiastic or passion-
ate. It is the time where the Tabaqueño artists need to showcase
or show off their musical talents with enthusiasm and passion.
Another meaning of Urag – Urag is to feel something bad or being
against to someone. I feel bad of profit oriented organizations in
Bicol especially in Tabaco producing a musical concert wherein
their artists are from Manila or outside Bicol. Their first goal is to
gain profit and second to entertain but I doubt to call it entertain-
ment. I feel bad also because some bands in Tabaco believe that
to be in a band is to be a show band and earn money, and also to
cover or to really copy a song of a mainstream band.
What is Urag – Urag?
It is an original Ta-
baqueño musical
concert of different
genres. It is original in
a sense that all the
artists are all from
Tabaco. The musical
genres are folk/
acoustic, rap, and
rock. Its main objec-
tive is to encourage
the youths as well as
the professionals to create their own original music or art, not just
be passive and copy what is the mainstream, but still continue
their studies or their career. The concert also, wishes to unite the
youths as we consider them our audience to be pro – life and pro
– active.
Haraya: How is the concert's outcome?
Richard Madrilejos: As usual the program did not start on
time. It should have started at 6:00 pm. I really wanted it to start
by the said time but things sometimes really don’t go as plan.
There were two acoustic performers. The Tabaqueño members of
Albay Rappers Club or ARC performed. There were more or less 15
rocks band of different genres that had performed last. The last 3
to 4 bands, I doubt if what they had performed were original be-
cause all are death genre already. Next time, it will be different.
Jimple (main man of Haunted Garage) and I observed that when
its rap time, the audience grew bigger in number.
Haraya: Tell me something about ABKAT?
Richard Madrilejos: '''ABKAT''' comes from the complete name
of the cultural organization which is '''A'''n '''B'''anwa: '''K'''ultura
buda '''A'''rtes kan '''T'''abaco, Inc.. It is a SEC and a Sangguniang

Panlungsod of Tabaco accredited. Its vision is to have a commu-
nity whether located in an urban or rural area that has residents
who are united and independent (not too much dependent on
government officials). We believe that a city or a town will be
fully or economically develop with its citizenry being united and
creative. Its mission is to do extensive research on cultural and
natural assets of the barangays of Tabaco at first and the whole
Bicol region soon and to produce a cultural program or show out
the researched assets. The group is also designed to do free art
workshops to the SKs of the 47 barangays of Tabaco. This shall
also serves as an avenue for art practitioners.
Haraya: Is there any upcoming gigs or concert from Abkat?
Richard Madrilejos: The activities will depend upon the Board
but in the past it depends upon the person who is really commit-
ted to pursuing it even if she do it alone. Personally, I plan to
have Urag – Urag Dos, a one – act play, a theatre fest (an original
short one act plays competition open for the 47 SK Councils of
Tabaco. I also want my colleagues to plan and excel in their own
fields.
Haraya: Is there any message for the cultural workers,
youngbloods, local subcultural heroes out there?
Richard Madrilejos: Message to everyone: I would like to bor-
row the wordings of Mr. John Lennon that our objective as an
artist is not to show you (the world) how to feel but only to ex-
press what we truly feel in order for you to relate and be given
enough possibilities for you to find or decide an answer or an-
swers.
