Johnson and Johnson spread its roots to the world’slargest democracy, India, during the endemic post-independenceturmoil of 1947. It was Mr. Patrick Whaley who set about withconfidence and determination during this period of turbulence to beginthe wok of establishing Johnson & Johnson in the subcontinent. Thingsprogressed quickly and by 1948, Johnson’s Baby Powder was beingmanufactured by British Drug House in Prabhadevi, Bombay, andmarketed by the company.Other consumer products like TEK toothbrushes, Johnson’s Baby Creamand Prickly Heat Powder followed suit. However, highly specializedproducts like Belladonna plasters, pharmaceuticals and Permacel Tapeswere imported from the parent company. It was only ten years laterthat the company began to manufacture its own products.
