by the American Heart Association
(AHA)
Old Way:
• A - Airway
• B - Breathing
• C - Circulation
New Way:
• C - Circulation
• A - Airway
• B - Breathing
Circulation/Compressions
• The new first step is doing chest
compressions instead of first
establishing the airway and then
doing mouth to mouth.
• The new guidelines apply to adults,
children, and infants but exclude
newborns.
Review
• Attempt to wake victim, and assess ABC’s
• Alert EMS/911 if any are absent
• Begin chest compressions (100/min)
• Open airway with Head Tilt/Chin lift Maneuver
after 30 compressions
• Provide two rescue breaths
• Repeat 5 cycles of 30 compressions & 2
rescue breaths for about two minutes

• After two minutes, reassess victim for
breathing and circulation, if no improvement,
continue CPR until EMS arrival
• If you saw the victim collapse, put an AED on
right away. If not, attach it after approximately
one minute of CPR (chest compressions and
rescue breaths).
