INTRODUCTIONMosttraditionalhistoriesoffairytalesbeginwithanunletteredcountryfolkthatinventsfairytalesandthenpassesthemalongbywordofmouthfromgeneration
to
generation.Somewhatlessfrequently,fairytaleshavebeenpresentedasdisintegrationsofancientmyth,astheremainsofpaleolithicbeliefs,asfictional-izedremnantsofelementaryplanetaryobservations,orasevi-denceofuniversalarchetypes.Suchexplanationshaveresultedinasensethatfairytales'originsareelusive,asenseofelusive-nessthathasshapedgrandnarrativesofthegenreaswellasreferencestofairytalesinbooksabouthistory,literature(includ-ingchildren'sliterature),psychology,andfolklore.Ithasbeensaidsooftenthatthefolkinventedanddisseminatedfairytalesthatthisassumptionhasbecomeanunquestionedproposition.Itmaythereforesurprisereadersthatfolkinventionandtransmis-sionoffairytaleshasnobasis
in
verifiablefact.Literaryanalysisunderminesit,literaryhistoryrejectsit,socialhistoryrepudiatesit,andpublishinghistory(whetherofmanuscriptsorofbooks)contradictsit.

FAIRYTALES
Thecurrentunderstandingofthehistoryoffairytalesisnotonlybuiltonaflimsyfoundation;its
very
basisrequiresanabsenceofevidence.Abeliefinfairytales'oraloriginsrequiresthattherebenowrittenrecordsoffairytalesthemselves.Thisperceptiongoesagainstthegrainofeveryscholarlyundertakingsincethescientificrevolutionmadeevidencethecentralplankofitsplatform.Peoplewhosubscribetoabeliefinfairytales'oraloriginsanddisseminationarenotembarrassedbythefactthatallrefer-encestooldwomenorotherpeople'stellingtalesorstoriesbefore1550arejustthat-referencestooldwomenorotherpeopletelling
stories,
andthemostwelearnaboutthestoriesthemselvesisthatsomeofthemhadwitchesormonsters.Inade-quatetoprovethatfairytalesexistedintheancientandmedievalworlds,thosereportsmerelyvalidatetheexistenceofstorytellingintheancientworld,afactthathas,however,neverbeenindoubt.Anyonelivinginastructurewithafoundationasricketyastheedificethathousesthetraditionalstudyoffairytaleswouldsearchoutstrongtimberstopropitup.Inrecentyearsthathasindeedhappenedbutwithproblematicresults.In
